Quick start

How It Works — Your Quick Start Guide

A few minutes of honesty now saves you months of chasing the wrong opportunities. Here's how to get the most out of this.

  1. 1

    Choose your track.

Grants, contracts, or both. Not sure? Pick the one closest to the money you’re actually going after. You can always come back and take the other.

  2. 2

    Tell us about your organization.

Your legal structure matters more than you’d think — it changes which questions even apply to you. A sole proprietor and a 501(c)(3) are not held to the same standard, and this assessment knows the difference.

  3. 3

    Answer honestly.

This is the whole game. An inflated score gives you a useless plan. Check the box only if it’s genuinely true and current — not “we’re working on it,” not “mostly.” The honest number is the one that helps you.

  4. 4

Items that don’t apply to you disappear.

You won’t be scored on things your structure doesn’t require. Nothing that doesn’t apply counts against you.

  5. 5

    Read your report.

You’ll get a score, a readiness band, the specific gaps to close, the documents your structure needs, and your next steps — plus any eligibility holds, which are different from gaps and worth reading first.

  6. 6

Save it, print it, share it.

Your report is yours. Email it to yourself, print it, hand it to your board. Then work the list.
